SharePoint - Export List to Excel - Content Query Web Part

I created a List in a Site. I used a Content Query Web Part to access the List from a different site (within the same Site Collection). This is working as expected.  I need to export the data to Excel, but CQWP does not allow me to export to Excel.  Would it possible if I were to use another type of Web Part (e.g. DataView)?  I realize a 3rd party tool (e.g. something through Bamboo) could be used, but I am trying to avoid having to pay for this functionality

Would this be feasible if I re-configured the List or did something different within SharePoint to acheive this? Ultimately, I need a List that is accessible from multiple sites within the same Site Collection and be able to export to Excel. .

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

One approach i took was to create a DVWP and then create an Active X that would export the items to Excel. This is a client side script.
