CCNA Certification Hardware

Hi,

I am pursuing CCNA certification through self study and wonder what ideal cheap Cisco hardware in eBay would be sufficient for me to work with.

Thanks for looking.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

We work a lot with the Cisco Networking Academy (I'm in Higher Education), and these are the units they use:
http://www.sigmanetacad.com/

The CCNA Discovery/Exploration bundle for courses 1 to 4 (there are 4 main courses) is probably what you would be looking for. It requires an account to view - I don't remember if it's open to everybody to register, so the list of parts is below:

CISCO SYSTEMS Cisco 1841 Integrated Services Router - Router - EN Fast EN - Cisco IOS - 1U
Mfr Part #: CISCO1841
CISCO SYSTEMS Cisco HWIC-2A/S 2-Port Async/Sync Serial WAN Interface Card

CISCO-LINKSYS LLC Linksys Wireless-N Gigabit Router WRT310N - Wireless router + 4-port switch - EN Fast EN Gigabit EN 802.11b 802.11g 802.11n (draft 2.0)
Mfr Part #: WRT320N
CISCO SYSTEMS Cisco - Rack mounting kit for 1841
Mfr Part #: ACS-1841-RM-19=

Keep in mind this is a kit designed for multiple types of environments - an individual like yourself wouldn't need everything on the list (especially with the different wireless items). Some of the items such as the router and switch have alternative parts that may be cheaper second-hand but provide the same functions for your purposes.

This is by no means a definitive list - it's the list that Cisco networking Academy classes across the country use in high schools and some colleges, which is designed to enable a student to go for CCENT and eventually CCNA certification.

There is a software called PacketTracer which allows you to setup every possible scenario without any hardware. I used packet tracer, cbtnuggets CCNA and train signal ICND1 and passed my exam with 89%.

Don't buy hardware unless you really have to. you can also search on ebay for “CCNA lab”. lots of students sell their old routers and switches like that

PacketTracer is a wonderful tool. It can't simulate everything, but it does enough for the CCNA. However, having the actual hardware to do stuff is a different experience than the software. Also, some people learn much better via actual hands on experience compared to simulated environments. Small things like wired and wireless issues that don't appear in the simulated environment (it's 100% the way you set it up to be, which is never the case in the real world) generally help the thought process for most people.

If you want to save some money and feel comfortable with using the software to do everything, great. That's what the students use when they are not in the lab and don't have access to the hardware.

The key was finding CHEAP material for CCNA certification.  Thanks for the tip.
