trapped by AS3 strict typing. program refuses to admit a TextField is a TextField

This is a constant problem that I have in AS3. I am doing a drag and drop game, that requires the draggedSprite.TextField.text to be compared to the targetSprite.TextField.text. Both Sprites definitely have textFields, but the program insists they don't. Can't even convince it with "TextField(targetSprite.getChildAt(0)).text". This is driving me insane.

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Are you adding these textFields in Flash or by pure ActionScript?
Are these "draggedSprite" and "targetSprite" classes, or library items?

If you create these items via Flash, you need to assign names to these TextFields in order to access them. I just answered this question last night, so follow these instructions:

Is there anything more you need help with?

what is the specific error message that you're getting? I'm assuming a null error, if that's the case it might be your setup itself that's making the compiler think it doesn't exist. If you don't come right you'll be better off posting your code snippet or the file itself.

as per EE ethics, post your solution that you figured out and then accept that as the answer.

that will close the question. if you want to give IqAndreas some points then you can split points between his comment and your own.

your prompt clean up will be appreciated :-)
