Where is HttpContext.Item stored?

I know when I save a value in a session variable, it is saved on the server. When I save that same value in ViewState, it is saved on the actual page. But where are values assigned to HttpContext.Item saved?

Context.Items.Add("empID", "123456");

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

For example, assuming EnabledViewState is "true" for your pages, if you do a View->Source (IE) or View->Page Source (Firefox), you would see something like this (note the viewstate example value below is not real. :-))

<input type="hidden" name="__VIEWSTATE" id="__VIEWSTATE" value="/wEPDwssfsUJODczNjQ5ffdfOTk0D2QWAgIDDfsfffdsf2QWAgIFDw8WAh4EV
/6kXnY1fdfd5AUSAwa" />

Your Context.Items are stored in the mentioned area above.

To decode the value you can use Convert.FromBase64String

protected void  Button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
        byte[] decode = Convert.FromBase64String(txtViewState.Text);
        txtViewState.Text = System.Text.Encoding.ASCII.GetString(decode);

txtViewState.Text here contains the viewstate value as an example.

I hope this helps.
