Windows Vista, black wallpaper which cannot be changed

I have a machine which was infected with Malware. This has all be cleared out but I am now left with the problem that the desktop background is just plain black. If you try and set it to something else nothing happens and it just stays black.

I done some googling around and found information relating to the registry key which says what the background is and that is currently set to one of the jpegs in the my pictures folder... but the back ground is still black!

Any ideas?

Probably a "policy" registry setting blocking it...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Download wallpaper_enable.reg from the following link:
http://www.winhelponline.com/fixes/wallpaper_enable.reg

Save the file to your desktop.
Right-click on the file and then choose "Merge"

you can navigate to the registry key that holds your desktop setup configuration and just delete that registry key, but only under HKEY_Current_User...
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
If you just delete the key called Desktop only, then log out and then log back in it should reset all your desktop setup information back to default.
If the policy is blocking, then you will not be able to bring up the box to change wallpaper, it would not exist or be greyed out.
can you manually change your wallpaper to a Vista default theme?  You might try that before everything else, just change to a default theme and then go back and change to your selected wallpaper again.
Hope this helps.

I tired that reg fix and it didn't make any difference.

I deleted the reg files but that also didn't make any difference. I tried making a new user account as a test and the problem extends to that as well, so it's not just a local account problem.

If you go into personalization and then desktop background whatever localtion you pic no pictures actually show up, however if you browse to the folders the pictures are there.

If you right click and then click set as desktop background nothing happens.

I managed to fix this by running a combofix, maybe there was something left over on the infection. Thanks for the help though guys.
