Mssqlserver 2005 system database

My msdb is 11GB, I tried to do a backup but I got "Time-out occurred while waiting for buffer latch type 3 for page (1:708), database ID 4." , I tried to shrink the log file I received the same timeout,I checked the execution time out and it's set to 0. I tried to do a dbcc checkdb on the msdb but I got the same timeout. What can I do with this msdb to reduce the size and get it working properly.

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

What is the size of the data file and what is the size of the Transaction Log?

Seems like msdb is piled with this information:

* Backup History
* Maintenance plan history
* Agent Jobs history

Just set some_value with any numeric value to purge or remove history information over a period of time..

declare @dt datetime
select @dt = getdate() - some_value
exec msdb.dbo.sp_delete_backuphistory @dt
GO
EXEC msdb.dbo.sp_purge_jobhistory  @oldest_date='2010-03-22T22:24:26'
GO
EXECUTE msdb..sp_maintplan_delete_log null,null,'2010-03-22T22:24:26'

Once done, take a full backup of msdb and then shrink your database or ldf file to a lower value.
