update row by primary key does not return any row

Hi,

I'm new to vb.net 2005 and I'm trying to update a row by finding it through the primary key as in the example from microsoft:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/tat996zc%28VS.80%29.aspx

Its probably something very basic.
my code below does not find the row and returns nothing. (errors out at row with FindBy<field> method)

I checked and i do have a primary key

whats wrong?
Thanks
Dim tblAdapterCRMdemo As New DataSet1TableAdapters.tblCRMdemographicsTableAdapter
Dim tblDemo As New DataSet1.tblCRMdemographicsDataTable

sub page load
Me.tblAdapterCRMdemo.Fill(ds.Tables("tblCRMdemographics"))
PostChanges("1234")
end sub

Protected Sub PostChanges(ByVal crmNum As String)

Dim newCRMDemographicsRow As DataSet1.tblCRMdemographicsRow

newCRMDemographicsRow = Me.tblDemo.FindByCRMresNumber(cint(crmNum))
newCRMDemographicsRow.MaritalStatusID = Me.cmbMaritalStatus.SelectedItem.Value

Me.tblAdapterCRMdemo.Update(tblDemo)

End Sub

From your code I am unable to see where you filled the data into tblDemo.

Maybe row 5 should read Fill(tblDemo) ??

if have added:
tblAdapterCRMdemo.Fill(Me.tblDemo)
in line 5 but still FindBy returns an empty row.
error still says
Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Line 483:        newCRMDemographicsRow = Me.tblDemo.FindByCRMresNumber(CInt(crmNum))
Line 484:        newCRMDemographicsRow.MaritalStatusID = Me.cmbMaritalStatus.SelectedItem.Value

Fails in line 484 because in line 483 newCRMDemographicsRow is empty.

Place a breakpoint (F9) on line 483
Right click tblDemo and select QuickWatch
Scroll down to Rows, then have a look at its Count property
How many rows are there?
