How do you change sorting order in Lotus Notes

When viewing messages in your in-box in Lotus Notes 8.5.1 you can sort on Sender, subject, date, size.  However, sorting on name goes by first name then last name.  Is there a way to sort all messages by last name?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

This question is actually two questions:
1. can one modify how a view is sorted
2. can one sort by last name

Re 1. Yes, you need to get/download the Domino Designer client, which is required to modify the Inbox (folder), and you need Designer permission on the database you intend to modify.

Re 2. Calls for another question: what is "last name"? You can have many types of originator addresses, to name a few:
- properly constructed Notes names (example: "Bugs Bunny/HQ/ACME")
- properly constructed Internet mail addresses ("Bugs Bunny" <bbunny&acme.org>)
- weird Internet mail addresses ("Superbugs" <bugsb&acme.org>)
- unknown Internet mail addresses ("thebugs&acme.org")

As you can see, only in the first 2 examples it is possible to extract the last name.

Then there are people with complex last names, Dutch names like "van der Vaart", Belgian names with "Vandersmissen", people who write "lastname firstname" (the French, East-Asia), and many more flavours.

My advice: don't do this, just accept what the sender sent you.

You can change the column or ad additional column that would show last name first:
