Mac AOL login problem

Brand new iMac, & I have set up several login accounts.

Bare bones software at this point: MS Office, AOL Desktop, Skype.

I have a problem on ONE account (of 5) where I get a TCP/IP failure upon login to AOL desktop.

I do not have the same problem on any of the other login accounts.

I have tried removing/reinstalling AOL, removed Skype entirely.  I removed all prefs file that had AOL embedded in the name on the "bad" login account.

What is really strange is that I can not even get to the webmail.aol.com site from the "bad" account.

Any thoughts on how to resolve?  I know I can likely set up a new account, copy over all pertinent documents, but that would be a significant amount of time.

Thanks

Maybe a DNS problem?

Open Terminal.app (found in /Applications/Utiities) and type

ping webmail.aol.com

What IP address does it resolve to?

You could also try changing your DNS server by manually adding

8.8.8.8
and
8.8.4.4
as DNS servers in your network prefs to see if you then get a different IP for webmail.aol.com
Might just be a temporary AOL webmail glitch: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2324921&tstart=0

Try using MacMail and IMAP instead as per the link in my earlier post.

ASKER

Thanks for the ideas....

I should have been more clear that AOL desktop works fine on the other (4) Mac accounts created on the machine.  I have ssues with AOL Desktop and AOL Webmail on just the one account.

Access to the web in general on the lone "bad" Mac account is fine.

This is the machine belonging to a client, who is stuck in the 80's and lives by AOL content other than mail.

The machine is running the latest Mac OS with all the pre-requisite updates.

will try the cache cleaners....I'll reply soon...
In the end I needed to create a new account....Hunch was the Skype install on the same login ID confused AOL setting.  thanks all
cache & prefs most likely the culprit.  ultimate resolution was creation of a new Login account.
