configuring a cisco 2960

I am trying to configure a new stack of switches and am running into a problem, the switch keeps trying to auto configure and is looking for a TFTP server. I have not seen this before, usually you would press n to not auto configure. I want to manually configure the switch. How do I get the switch to stop looking for the FTP server. Output is below.

When I boot the switch it freezes on this line:

I have to plug the switch into the lan to get it moving again, and then it looks for the ftp server.

Press RETURN to get started!

It's setup for autoinstall. If you power it up with no ethernet connections, you should get to the command prompt pretty quick.

mredfelix: Cannot get to the console the switch keeps trying to auto install

donjohnston: non such luck, tried without a ethernet conection and the switch freezes when it get to the following line: Compiled Thu 21-Aug-08 15:59 by nachen

I let it sit there for 15 minutes and when I plug in a cross-over to another switch it starts looking for the TFTP server
