Windows 2008 Server and Outlook 2007 unable to connect
Hi there,
I have a Windows 2008 server 64bit which we use as a test / play thing.
I have recenctly installed office 2007 32bit on it as we need to test some software with outlook.
Very strangley the Outlook 2007 will not connect to a pop3 account ???
We do have access to the internet from the server, we can ping the off site pop3 mail server.
I have disabled the firewall and have uninstalled the antivirus package !
Still no joy !
The 2008 server is not being used as a terminal server !
Has anyone come across something like this ? Is there something I am missing ?
Regards
Paul

Its depends which POP3 account are you trying to add. gmail, yahoo, etc? Is there any error message when you saying cannot connect?
Hi,
To test connectivity, first of all install the TELNET client functionality on your Windows 2008 server.
After that, from a CMD prompt type the following command :
TELNET pop3.server.com 110
(where pop3.server.com is the FQDN of the pop3 server, or its IP address)
If the result is a whole black window with a cursor blinking at the top left, or a POP banner, then the connection is working.
If the result is something like "Connecting to..." that stays for a while then something block the POP3 TCP session.
Do the same to check SMTP protocol :
TELNET smtp.server.com 25
Have a good day.

Hi there,
Thanks for the quick reply.
Yes we can telnet to the pop3 and smtp servers.
We can access the account using the included windows mail.
We simply cannot connect using Outlook 2007 32bit.
I was wondering if there is something I have to do as the OS is 64bit and Outlook is 32bit

Hi,
There's no problem about 32 bit Outlook 2007 on 64 bit OS Windows 2008 because I'm currently in the same situation and all is working ok.
Can you try to launch Outlook in XP mode compatibility and launch it as administrator ?

Hi,
Is it possible for you to install the MS Network Monitor 3.1 on your computer to capture network traffic from your computer at the moment you launch outlook ?
If you have no clue about where the problem is, this capture could give your some hints...
