How long do messages stay in SMTP queue?

We have 2 sites in our organisation with a Exchange server at each. One server is currently down and has been for a number of days. On the other sever, I can see the SMTP queue building up, but I think messages have been lost from the point where the failed server crashed. Is there a way to increasse the retention time or  get these messages back?

By default 48hrs until permanent failure.

You can change the settings on the SMTP virtual server delivery properties.

Thanks Shaun. I have set the expiration to 10 days  - we should be up and OK by then I hope? Do I need to do anything to make sure the server gets this change or is clicking "OK" enough?
No problem,

I would restart the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol service for good measure,

Regards
