WSUS Not Responding issue

Everytime I start the WSUS MMC I get the error message that "This snap-in is not responding"

The same thing happens when I try to synchronize updates or even change the update filters. Just hangs and gives the not responding error. It doesn't seem to be downloading updates and pushing them to clients, as the client machines haven't been updated in over a month. The strange thing is that on the rare occasion there are new updates that are ready to be approved/denied.

I have deleted the wsus.msc file but that did nothing.  I am wondering if it might be an issue with iis?

We are running Windows SBS 2008, it is the only server in the domain. It runs AD, DHCP, DNS, File & Print, Exchange

Any tips would be welcome.

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

You can try installing the console on a remote PC (to verify that the problem is not with the server)

Use the WSUS 3 install file and when installing, choose to install the admin console only.  You may need to install the latest report viewer and .NET framework 3.5 first

If this works you can try reinstalling things one at a time on the server (or just keep administering WSUS remotely), save .NET for last as it has caused me issues in the past and I had to end up reinstalling everything from scratch (with many reboots in between)

Good luck.

Found out that SSL was enabled in IIS for the selfupdate virtual site.  once i removed that things looked to be sorted.  Will keep an eye on it and if it was just a temporary solution then I am sure you will hear back from me.

I had a similar problem and found on the internet that a Repair of the .NET Framewok would help (Control Panel>Uninstall Program, select .NET installation>Uninstall but select the Repair option instead of Uninstall).
It worked.
