examples of self-sacrifice

In modern day, or in other times, other than soldiers, which is self-explaining, are there any radical examples of someone sacrificing their own life or risking it for the sake of a total stranger, that is documented?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Tiras25, sorry, I did not get your answer.

sacrificial bravery does not depend on crowd or population.

people help people. But I am looking for real-life examples beyond that- like someone throwing themselves before a car to save a baby (just an example) etc

If you know, you can let know.
How about WW2?

Or, have you heard of it?

Tiras25, in the question, I had mentioned "other than soldiers"
There were many sacrifices during the war times.  Yes, besides soldiers.

Also, this question also has the feel of an academic assignment, and if so, you really ought to be doing the work yourself.

Tiras25, I am not a student, fyi-

War time is understandable- that is why i put that in the question, I am interested in non-war time stories/examples of where people sacrificed their lives or showed care in such extent. I have not see anything like that in the news etc

The examples I could think of were
*the men who gave their lifeboats for others.
*The young Moravians who sold themselves as slaves to serve the slaves

if you find any, feel free to participate in this question.

Even though there was no direct answer, I did not think about the 'many sacrifices during the war times other than soldiers' part. So thanks for that.'
I don't think I provided a valuable answer here.  I wish I have a choice not to accept these points.
