Good hunting :) never found one yet and I have been in Firewalls and IT security for nigh on 30 years. Unless you count the new ISA replacement, FTMG that is. You do need to know how to use the products though, they are not for beginners.

An ISA beats a hardware firewall for security.  That being said if you wanted the most secure network you would use both.  Hardware is less load on the machines and easier to setup and maintain.  For most application a solid enterprise hardware firewall will do.  For a medium to small business I like to use sonicwalls just for ease of setup and maintenance. There are some things a hardware firewall will do that ISA won"t such as Virus Checking that I like as well.

FTMG does virus, content, malware checking plus NIS although the automated content filtering and updates is on a subscription basis unfortunately.

There is a linux system called untangle that will allow fire walling, web filtering, anti virus etc.  -   www.untanlge.com
I am using it at several of my clients and they love it - especially the reports.

If you are willing to use Linux (or install it into a VM) Squid is good. It features very good caching and a highly customisable firewall, but you must be willing to edit *nix-like .conf files in a terminal, it does not come with a nice GUI like ISA.

In my opinion ISA is a very good firewall, however I would use Squid (possible with a hardware firewall) due to its impressive speed. Its not as easy to configure, but its worth it in the long-term.

Just as an FYI - Untangle uses Squid as its firewall and has a pretty good GUI.

I'm a big fan of Astaro. It's available as hardware or software. I find their interface is way easier to navigate than ISA or Checkpoint.

Assume it is a split across the board
