Just do it from command prompt like:

1) Make sure you have .NET framework 3.5 & Windows installer 4.5 installed on the machine.
2) Download and extract SQL Server Express 2008 to a local folder
3) Browse to the folder where you have extrated the files to though a command window
4) Execute the command Setup.exe /q /ACTION=upgrade /INSTANCENAME=SQLEXPRESS

Raja Jegan RSQL Server DBA & ArchitectCommented:
Do you have any other additional info in error message other than Unknown error so that we can narrow it down as permission issue or some .Net framework issue..

lucs_63Author Commented:
Unfortunately the only message is this  'errore non specificato',  translated in english language I think is: 'unspecified error'

I can try to install the English version of sql server studio express 2005 if is possible...  ( the version of Windows 7 is Italian )

Raja Jegan RSQL Server DBA & ArchitectCommented:
Ok.. Seems like you are trying to ALTER Table right.
Try the TSQL Equivalent of it and that would give you any specific error message which might help out some times..
I am not able to decode the Italian messages and hence not able to dig further.

lucs_63Author Commented:
through TSQL it works fine...
I think the problem is in Sql express management studio GUI

Raja Jegan RSQL Server DBA & ArchitectCommented:
Ok, If that is confirmed, then uninstall SSMSE and re-install it again to resolve this one.
Have gone through this scenario with one another asker like you and Re-installing SSMSE helped out at that time.

Raja Jegan RSQL Server DBA & ArchitectCommented:
Make sure you apply the SP3 version of SSMSE which might have some additional fixes as well.

I uninstalled ad re-installed again ( with SP3 )  but nothing has changed...
you have any suggestions?

Raja Jegan RSQL Server DBA & ArchitectCommented:
Ok, One another try..
Install SSMSE 2008 and try doing the ALTER table again.

Kindly run DBCC CHECKDB on your database once to confirm whether there is any integrity issues in your database.

use ur_db_name
GO
DBCC CHECKDB;
GO

I suspect some kind of issues with your database..

Seems like you have less than 10 tables in your database and no issues with respect to the database structure and data arrangement..
Can you try taking a database backup, delete your old database and then restore the database backup as a new database and then try again once.

lucs_63Author Commented:
I tried according to your instructions, but nothing has changed unfortunately
I also tried to restore with a different name but it did not work either way

Raja Jegan RSQL Server DBA & ArchitectCommented:
Kindly let me know the steps you did to take backup and restore..

Alternatively try the steps below:

1. Use Database Publishing wizard to script out your Entire database along with data to a single script file

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=56E5B1C5-BF17-42E0-A410-371A838E570A&displaylang=en

2. Drop your current database. ( Take a full backup to be in safer side).
3. Create database from your script file.

This should resolve your issue..

1) before I make backup the database with SSME: right click on database -> tasks -> backup
2) I deleted the database: right click on Database -> Delete
3) I restored the databse: right-click on Database -> tasks -> Restore -> Database...

now I tried to follow your steps, but I can not restore the database
you can tell me the procedure?
If I open the script with the menu: File Open and select the file created by Database Publishing Wizard, it appears the error: insufficient memory to complete operation

Thanks

>> now I tried to follow your steps, but I can not restore the database

Ok, Try the steps below

1. Right click Databases in SSMS
2. Restore Database
3. Specify database name in "To database" field
4. Choose From device and then select your backup file.
5. Click ok

>> insufficient memory to complete operation

Do you have any memory resource contention in your database server..
resource contention can also lead to some other random kind of issues like this..

With your procedure can not do a restore from the file created with Database Publishing Wizard.

Just run the script file created using Database Publishing wizard by connecting it to SSMS..

Ok, but I do not know how ...
Can you help me?

The file is large about 900 MB...
0

Raja Jegan RSQL Server DBA & ArchitectCommented:
Ok...

* Open the file in SSMS.
* Run it which should create your database along with all data loaded into it.

lucs_63Author Commented:
Sorry, but the file is too large. I also tried on another pc and gives me the same error: out of memory.
There is another procedure to execute the file without loading it into memory?

Raja Jegan RSQL Server DBA & ArchitectCommented:
Ok, then try running that File using SQLCMD like this from command prompt

SQLCMD -S servername -U username -P password -i input_sql_file -o output_file

If you are using Windows Authentication, then use

SQLCMD -S servername -E -i input_sql_file -o output_file
