Installing wordpress in subdirectory

I'm trying to install wordpress in a subdir (called journal), in the root dir I have another blog type called "dolphin". But when I install wordpress and edit the htaccessm all of dolphin's links get routed to wordpress. I'm trying to avoid that.

Attached is htaccess I'm using for wordpress.
#BEGIN Wordpress
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
#RewriteEngine On
#RewriteBase /journal/
#RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
#RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
#RewriteRule ^journal/(.*?) /journal/index.php [L]
#END Wordpress

try moving it to the subfolder  (or adding a new .htaccess in the subfolder with the wordpress stuff, if you have something relevant for dolphin in the main .htaccess file)

where is this .htaccess-file?   in the root directory or in the subfolder "journal/"?

If you place this file in the subfolder "journal", the webserver will only respect it for contents in the subfolder

the .htaccess is in the root dir.
