vSphere 4.0 VS Xenserver 6.5

Does anybody have any preference\recommendation on which Hypervisor to use for running Xendesktop?

Thank you,
Jaime,

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

XenDesktop is compatible with both.  That being said, XenServer is MADE to be compatible and optimized for XenDesktop.  Add to that the fact that you would not have to buy licenses for XenServer.  Depending on the version of XenDesktop you buy, Enterprise Essentials come with XenDesktop at no extra charge.  Even if you use the free version of XenServer, is still has a much richer feature set than the free version of VMWare.  XenServer is just an all-around better value.

I know the price value is better and that's why we are looking into that direction.  what about performance wise or support level from both vendors?

Thanks for your time,
Jaime.

Performance on XenServer is outstanding.  As I said, it's optimized for the XenApp and XenDesktop stack.  Add Provisioning Server into the mix, and you save yourself a bundle in maintenance and storage costs.

In both cases, you would need to pay for support.  In the case of VMWare, you would still have to pay for Citrix Support, as they do not support XenDesktop, and would press you toward View.  View has less performance over WAN links, and eats up a great deal of disk space as each desktop OS is independent and takes up its own storage.  XD with PVS uses one Gold Master image for all desktops.

If you choose not to pay for support, you can always post questions here.  Further, you can engage proserv support from a Citrix partner.  Let me know if you need that.

We have Citrix coming in this afternoon for a demo.  Do you know of anyone who is looking for a job in supporting Xenserver, Xendesktop, and Xenapp?
