try to create a new file in the folder.

you could try to copy the files out of the folder?

a restart never hurts..

you could check your process manager to see if multiple copies of word are hidden, but locking your files.

What version of Windows are you running, is the computer stand alone or on a network, how is the hard drive formatted (FAT or NTFS)?

@wrmichael - I can create a new folder inside that folder but can't copy any files. Tried restart but it didn't help.

@johnny - I am running windows XP. the files are located on a shared file server which runs server 2003.

Did you create the files directly in the folder, or did you move them their?  Do you have control over the server?

The files were created directly in the folder by someone else, but neithe of us can access any files. I dont have control over the server. Is there anything with File inheritence ?

It looks like a permissions problem to me.  Time to talk to the server administrator I would say.

Can you check the security permissions on the folder that contains the files? You could have some weird write only permissions set at the folder level and the files are inheriting these permissions.

If permissions don't seem to help you might check server and client event logs.
