keep getting message Word is preparing to background print document

I have Word 97, Windows XP and until yesterday had never seen this or had this problem.  Have tried just about everything and about ready to throw this computer.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Have you recently added a new printer to your system or changed your default printer at the XP level?  Background print spooling was a feature to permit continued editing while you sent documents to print. Word 97 laser printer speeds were much slower and the feature freed Word to continue to do something else.  A cute printer icon shows up in the status bar (bottom of the Word window) on the left side - animated to show the pages being spooled.  In troubleshooting, you should notice the page counts increasing until the document is ready to send.  There are option in Word and in each printer configuration that could be causing this to surface.

Not really helpful.  No I have not added a new computer.  If there are options in Word or the printer to configure this, how do I access them?

No I have not added a new computer. - sorry the question was a nwe printer to your computer?
Word options are available from the Tools button on the Menu bar.  Last one - Options - look for some mention of background printing.
Printer options - go to the Printer page - through Control Panel, if you don't know another way.  Right-click on your default printer and choose properties.  Here you may find a check box for start printing after the last page - uncheck it.

No luck.  Hopefully, soon something will help resolve this problem.  Seems like I have tried so many things to no avail.

Is this happening with just one document or several?  It could be document corruption - I've seen that occur often with corrupt docs.

Tried to print another document, also from Word 97, and no luck.  My printer certainly is printing - did a test page.

Try searching for and deleting all instances of normal.dot.

Also - try all suggestions found here
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822005/en-us

It's probably a corrupt normal.dot.

The fastest and easiest thing to do is search for and delete or rename all normal.dot on the hard drive.  If that fails, then try the other suggestions, especially deleting the Word data key from the registry.
