Best VoIP codec for use on a cell phone SIP account?

Hi Experts,
I have an android phone with Sipdroid installed. If I am in a 3g data area, which would be the best codec to use?

Sipdroid has speex, GSM, alaw, ulaw, bv16

Would g729 be better if it was available?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I think GSM has the best compromise between voice quality and bandwidth required of the freely available codecs. G.729b has good voice quality and even lower bandwidth requirements. However not all systems support it with some requiring licensing to use it.

G729 is the best codec between the ones that you list...It has low bandwidth consumption and supported by all VOIP carriers...If it's not available the Ulaw will give you wonderful voice quality but with high Bandwidth consumption...You need 64kbps up and down dedicated for the call in order to get pure voice

I believe I really have to ask elsewhere to get a more detailed answer. So would not be of great help to anybody.
