log rotation on plesk

I currently have a hosting client who has a access_log.processed file which is 200meg.

So I have some options in plesk in an attempt to make hard disc usage smaller.

Logo rotation by time : 1 month.

Does this mean the client can still get web-stats for 12 months?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Hi,

In Plesk, the hit data in the ‘procesed’ log file(s) has already been processed by the ’statistics’ program and there for you can simply delete them.  Manually deleting the processed log files will not negatively impact Plesk. These files are a byproduct of creating webstats and removing them will not remove any web stats for your site. However, I like to keep these files just in case I need to go back and look for any problems or require a re-import for webstats :)

Plesk panel has the following conditions.

log file size                - enter the size in kilobytes in the appropriate field
time                           - Dropdown list. It can be set to Daily, Weekly, and Monthly.

Once a log is renamed to. processed.  it can be removed. The option you are looking for to save space is "Specify the maximum number of log files". The maximum number is the number of processed files to be kept for each log file.

As well, you can also compress log files while rotating them to save disk space. To do this, select the Compress log files checkbox to enable compression.

Hope it helps.
Cheers,

ok.

So do I have to open the web stats (each month) to generate the stats or does this happen automatically?

I will now do the following.

1. rotate logs monthly.
2. max number of log files = 1
3. Compress log files.
4. delete large access_log.processed

Does this seem ok?
Brad HoweDevOps ManagerCommented:
That will be fine.

The stats I would assume the host provided, has automated the processing of the weblogs since you already have one completed.

If not, you may need to do it manually.

Sorry to be a pain, but is there anyway we can check if they are automated?

or is the fact we have this access_log.processed file answer that?
Brad HoweDevOps ManagerCommented:
That is my assumption.  When i have a Pleask host, it was automated.

After enabling log rotation, flip it to daily, take a look to see if it was processed.

There is always a way.
