icons disappearing on Windows 7 Pro 32bit workstations

I have 3 x desktops in which their icons are disappearing.   This seems to usually happen when logging onto their computers first thing in the morning.  It sometimes happens in the afternoon when logging back in from lunch.  I figured it was an old XP group policy but since then I've set all group policy settings to 'not configured' which should revert the settings back to off.  Any suggestions?

Do you mean that the desktop icons disappear or the icons in the system tray by the clock?  If it is the desktop, does the taskbar also disappear?  If it is the icons by the clock, this is a problem in Windows that is fixed by a registry change.

It's the icons on the desktop only.  Nothing else is affected.

Seems like it also might be related to it thinking that there are multiple monitors and that this one is not the primary monitor.

The next time their icons disappear I'll have to try the steps mentioned in the link.  I'll keep this ticket open and I'll give it a shot when it happens again.

btpringle,

I've tried everything and no luck.  I did notice a GPO that pertains to roaming profiles and network timeout settings...  I do not use roaming profiles so I set it to 'not configured'.  We'll see if this helps.

I disabled all GPO's and I noticed someone today had their icons disappear?!  I have no idea what's causing this.

I think I see the problem.  I'm disabling the scheduled maintenance feature...  It runs various icon checks to assure their valid...  Even though all users seeings these symptoms have valid icons for some reason the scheduled maintenance thinks their bad.

I'm about 99% sure I figured it out...  If you load the group policy editor, go to Computer Configuration, Administrative Tools, System, Troubleshooting and Diagnostics, and go to Scheduled Maintenance and set it to disabled.

The scheduled maintenance in Windows 7 checked for broken icons.  For some reason it's detecting some of the icons as broken.  I turned this off and the problem went away.
