the VMware vCenter Agent is stopped and when I try to start it I get an error that state "Error during configuration of the host".  Any recomendations?
You need to restart the SSHD service either through command or from the VI client it self where you enabled the ports. On the same box, you will find a button called "Options" that will allow you to start/stop the SSHD service on the ESX host.

command that you can on the ESX service console: service sshd restart
Did you try to connect directly to ESX host unsing VI client? what happens then... What is the version of ESX, vCenter you are using?
If have not registered your ESX servers and vCenter on DNS, everytime when you reboot It  VI client will not be able to connect to your serverfro 10 to 30 minutes.  It is a know problem.
IF the problem persists, Try the flowwoing on ESX service console

service mgmt-vmware restart
service vmware-vpxa restart

To open filewall ports you can use the Service console command esxcfg-firewall
