Exchange not sending emails to one domain

Hi,

we are running Exchange 2003 SP2 and yesterday a user emailed an external recipient 3 times and they didn't receive the email until hours later.

I have looked in the logs and can't see the email being delivered and am looking for some advice please.

The first email was sent at 14.55 with a 7Mb attachment, then again at 15.02 with a word file attachment and then again at 15.05 with no attachments.

The recipient didn't receive the emails until hours later although I can't see any mention of this in the logs.

We have had problems before with emailing this one domain.

My log extracts are attached in the code snippet.

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Ok,

PTR      217.154.147.226      mail.letterpart.com      24 hrs

FQDN is set up as mail.letterpart.com and the check DNS button says it is valid

Oops we are listed on backscatter.org That is new and odd as I was sure I switched off NDR's a long time ago. I will now look into this.

Hi,

Check your domain sending IP address are blacklisted.
http://www.mxtoolbox.com/blacklists.aspx
If your IP address is blacklisted then receiving domin will not be able to accept emails.
AND
Check in your Gateway server if it has forwarded the email to you receiving domin server. It will have details like it has established connection with the server and queued for delivery.

also chances that its issue for the receiving domain.. There Gateway serves are blocking emails..

Regards,
Krishna

Trouble is I have sent 3 emails to this domain today and they have all gone through so this isn't an all or nothing blocking going on.

Have also noticed in the Message Tracking Centre I get the following when I try to view the History although all Googling says not to worry about this as it is due to the recipients welcome message being spread across more than one line.

If some mail is getting through to the domain and others are not, then that smells of Content Filtering.
Can you send a simple message through with just Test in the Subject and Just Testing in the Body?
Backscatter is down to you not filtering invalid recipients at your end.  Are you running a single Exchange Server or multiple?
If single - make sure you have enabled Recipient Filtering and then you can safely leave NDR's enabled as rejecting invalid recipients will not cause you to send an NDR email, the sender will become responsible.
Have a read of http://support.microsoft.com/kb/823866 for the Recipient Filtering info.

Looking at the 3 emails that were delayed yesterday and I see that Exchange didn't try to send them to the remote host until over an hour after they were queued for remote delivery.

21/04/2010 16.05 SMTP: Message routed and Queued for Remote Delivery
21/04/2010 17.14 SMTP: Started Outbound Transfer of Message
21/04/2010 17.14 Message transferred to and/or through SMTP

So it is looking like Exchange had these emails sat in the queue for over an hour. (see attached)

That could well be Anti-Virus software interference.
What have you got installed on your systems?
Can you uninstall it completely (disabling is no good), then see if your mail-flow issues continue to pop up.
Also worth downloading the Exchange 2003 Best Practises Analyzer and running it to see if that throws up and interesting info:

Hi,

we are running GFI Mail Essentials and there is no way I can uninstall it as we would be flooded with spam within seconds and the director would go even more mental.

I might contact GFI witht eh logs and get their take on it.

I will go through  the BPA again although I have done this before.

thanks for your continued help.

You might also want to delete and re-create your SMTP Connector as this may have gotten a little messed up.
Simple enough to recreate, just write down all the settings of your current one, then mirror those onto a new connector, then delete the old connector.

While we haven't resolved this completely, at least we have narrowed it down to GFI MailEssentials spam software.
