Device Manager and UPS software installation in HYPER-V 2008 R2

Hi Experts,

I am running into an issue here. Recently, I have started setting up HYPER-V 2008 R2 servers and although everything is sorted, something still remains usorted.

We use a POWERWARE 5115 UPS for our servers and it comes with an application called LANSAFE v6.0 which you can setup to schedule an AUTO SHUTDOWN of the server in the event of power failure. We have been able to install this software in other versions of WINDOWS up until now without a problem but with HYPER-V R2, I am not sure how it will work as you must install USB drivers manually, they not being signed drivers.
I did approach the tech support of POWERWARE and guess what they haven't even heard of HYPER-V R2 or Windows Server 2008 Core edition :-(

Now what I was thinking of doing is attempting to install the USB drivers for the UPS etc. via  DEVICE MANAGER but HYPER-V r2 doesn't come with a DEVICE MANAGER. I have gone through some blogs and apparantely they say there is a way you can view DEVICE MANAGER from a remote machine but in read-only mode. Is this true??

At this point in time when I try to open it via a remote PC which has the appropriate authentication credentials for HYPER-V, I get the error as attached. And yes the services mentioned are already turned on and REMOTE MANAGEMENT enabled.

My question is how do I GET this UPS USB drivers and Software installed on the Server. It is important for me to have the servers shutdown gracefully in the event of a power failure.

You didn't state it explicitly, but I'm assuming you're using "Bare metal Hyper-V", which is a Windows Core Hyper-V optimized install of 2008 R2...

For the remote management piece, yeah, it'll work.  At the command line, type:   sconfig    then enable Remote Management (WinRM) for the server.  Sconfig is a great tool that was included with R2 for simpler management of basic system configuration (network, joining domain, etc) and uses powershell commands behind the "Text GUI".  That could help with the correct settings for Remote Management.

Also, here's a quick command-line ref. for Core Remote Management:  http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/HVRemote

What account are you using the on the "client" box?  Domain Admin privileges?
Another option would be to tweek the Local Security Policy and disable "Require Signed Drivers", that could get you around the driver signing issue.   Think that is also a boot-time F8 option too...

Hi ScooterAnderson,

I thought when I mention HYPER-V 2008 R2 it meant BARE METAL anyway. Yes it is BARE METAL.

As I said in the question, remote management is already enabled via sconfig and the firewall too and I can check event viewer, services mmc etc. from another PC without a problem. Only the device manager seems to be a problem.

Please explain this -
"Another option would be to tweek the Local Security Policy and disable "Require Signed Drivers", that could get you around the driver signing issue.   Think that is also a boot-time F8 option too..."

How do I go about doing this and even if I do, I still need a way to be able to install the DRIVER from a CD, so I still will need access to DEVICE MANAGER without a doubt.
HYPER-V Bare Metal machine is part of a workgroup and I am using the LOCAL ADMIN credentials.

Check firewall too on the Hyper-V box..

Here's a discussion on this issue:  http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/winservercore/thread/04d7cd01-4140-4b67-afa0-c299a8cc7a67
The thread dead-ends, but there's some good troubleshooting steps in there.

Hi Mate,

Already gone through these threads before -
First thread I do not understand, how I will do this on HYPER-V R2. Can you explain.

"Go to Local Computer Policy / Computer Configuration / Administrative Templates / System / Device Installation and enable "Allow remote access to the PnP interface". Reboot the Server Core box."

Secondly, even if I do it, this guys says you can only use it read-only mode so that will be no good to me anyway -

"You should then be able to connect with Device Manager. However, be aware that Device Manager is read only when used remotely."

ScooterAnderson,

Ok I got it worked out on not this server but another server and DEVICE MANAGER is only opening up in READ-ONLY MODE. What shall I do now?

ScottAnderson,

Device Manager opened up in READ-ONLY mode. How do I install this driver for Powerware UPS. is someone else there to help ??

From the research I've done, core is functioning as designed, regarding Device Manager.

Stepping back, the requirement here is to get an un-signed driver installed on Server Core.
Two ways we've been pursuing it:
1.  On the server (problems with unsigned driver)
2.  Remotely (cannot because DM is read-only)

Let's troubleshoot #2.
Get to the console of the server.
To disable the signature requirement for the current boot process:
Restart the computer and during startup, press F8.
    Select Advanced Boot Options.
    Select Disable Driver Signature Enforcement.
Boot into Windows and install the unsigned driver.
Reboot the server to "unset" the "allow unsigned driver installation" switch

Hi ScooterAnderson,

The problem is that I do not know how to install this driver. I still need to be able to use device manager to point the POWERWARE UPS to the .inf file.

This should fix you up.  How to install .inf file from the command line:

Prior to testing this on my HYPER-V box I tried to install it on my WINDOWS 7 machine and all I get is installation failed. Attached is a snapshot.

Hate to say it, but you probably need to go back to the manufacturer.  You can't be the first customer running Server Core... It's been out for over a year now, the vendor should be able to support it.

Hmm. So my question still remains unresolved.
Can someone else please have a look and make suggestions....

Scott AndersonPrincipal Support EngineerCommented:
Just verifying, you tried the command line install while having Driver Signing disabled on the server, not your Win7 box?
0
manav08Author Commented:
Ok,

I thought I will give it a try on the server itself so I rebooted it and checked the DISABLE DRIVERS SIGNING OPTION and I was then able to install the inf file but POWERWARE UPS DRIVER still is in an error/uninstall state as before even after doing a couple of reboots with DISABLE DRIVER SIGNIGHT OPTION on.

I am suspecting that the instructions in http://www.windowsitpro.com/article/installation2/how-can-i-install-a-inf-file-from-the-command-line-.aspx are just for installing a .inf file in general. I am pretty sure that there must be a way to be able to say to the device manager that use this .inf file for this DEVICE INSTANT ID.

I even downloaded the DEVCON utility and tried the following command and its combinations but doesn't seem to work.
Maybe its because DEVCON is only available in 32 bit and it may not be compatible with server 2008.

Ok Looks like I have got the DRIVER Sorted now. I used a tool called wdreg which comes in the CD of POWERWARE SOFTWARE and the following commands when I typed them the driver got installed.

I am still working out the software, so I will let you know how I go.

Hi All,

As promised, I have now typed out the exact procedure for installing POWERWARE UPS driver and software on a HYPER-V Machine.
The instructions can be found on my website -
http://www.confatech.com/hyper-v-articles/hyper-v-ups-installation

Because of the fact that ScooterAnderson helped me throughout the posts and motivated me into keep going and hunt for the answer, I would like to award him full points for his effort. Thanks mate, you're a champ!!

I have the same issue, but the link to your website would appear to be out of date. Could you post the solution or give an updated link?
Thanks

Hi Solplus,

I will do this tomorrow or day after for you.
Unfortunately my website got hacked into and my backup was also too old. I will send a post as soon as I am done reposting the article.

Cheers,

Hi solplus,

As promised, I have re-posted the article.
Please refer to the same link as before. However please note that any sub-links are not working as I have to redo my website a bit but please feel free to ask any questions here if you wish.
Just proceed with Step 1 and you should be all good.

Thanks manav8, appreciate your assistance.
We have this setup at a number of customers and at least one of them only has a serial port and not usb. Do you know if this solution will work with a serial port?

Yes it will. I have tried it both with Serial & USB.
