I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

you use the ColWidths property

for example, to resize a column so that it fits the maximum size of all values in the rows :
procedure AutoFitStringGridColumn(SG:TStringGrid;aCol:Integer);
 With SG do for i:=0 to RowCount-1 do
   if W>MaxW Then MaxW:=W;
 SG.ColWidths[aCol]:=MaxW+4; // add 4 pixels to max width

You call such a procedure only once after you add a lot of data.
to avoid doing that (scan all text size for each row) each time you add or change a cell value, you can use a simpler procedure :
procedure AutoFitStringGridCell(SG:TStringGrid;aCol,aRow:Integer);
 With SG do
   if W>ColWidths[aCol] Then ColWidths[aCol]:=W;

ah, and your last 2 question have nothing to do with internet programming, nor Database. Instead, use Delphi Programming zone (you can keep components), this will give opportunity to more experts to correctly answer your question
