How do I clear a rogue antivirus malware/trojan/virus attack on Windows XP SP3

My pc has been attacked by a virus/spyware/malware.
When I try to open a browser it appears to seize my computer and then starts redirecting me to pornographic websites.
I get a security warning that continuously pops up saying "application cannot be executed.
The file xxx.exe is infected. Do you want to activate your antivirus software now".

I am normally protected by the norton 360 version 2.0 antivirus.
I went to www.norton.com/virushelp and tried to apply some of the suggestions there.
Basically I cannot identify the name of the virus. In one of the warnings it calls the threat: bankerfox.A the name keeps changing however.
I don't know if this is the correct name of the virus or whether the rogue program is giving it that name.

Please help

Run a temporary file remover...CCleaner is a good one and it's free.
http://www.ccleaner.com/

Download Combofix by sUBs.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Before running Combofix, temporary disable any firewall(s) shield(s) ect...to prevent any conflicts with Combofix. After Combofix is done scanning, it will create a log, for further instructions, save and paste the results by Attach File, or by Code Snippet so other experts can take a look at it. Once after the log looks clean, you may enable your firewall(s) shield(s) ect. Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet. Your Internet connection will be automatically restored just before Combofix completes its scan. If Combofix runs into problems, your Internet connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

You'll might need to rename the file before saving to your desktop so it will not be blocked.

Please note: Don't run Combofix in Safe Mode.

If your anti-virus is having difficulty, it may have been compromised by the trojan / virus. you can run an online anti-virus over your system to help identify & eliminate the threat. Try http://housecall.trendmicro.com although most of the major vendors will offer this service too.

Download Malware-Bytes: http://www.malwarebytes.org/

Anti virus programs look for files that have been corrupted with a known virus signature, anti spyware programs will look for files or registry entries that are known spyware. However malware may often exist and lay undetected. Malware is a program or utility, often disguised as something familiar, perhaps an anti virus program, but instead does not do what it claims to be, and instead will hijack your browser, delete files or other damage to your computer.
