All shortcut icons missing from desktop including documents and software, recycle bin, etc

While playing with Google, I noticed I lost the icons on my desk top.  The task bars, menu bars, etc are find.  I have tried replacing the shortcuts, but they will not "land" on the desktop.
How can I put my favorite icons back there?
