i suspect the sound is coming from the OS, and not Java

It happens only with applets,  JNLP clients works fine.  Also not on all machines.

Check the Sounds settings in Control Panel if using Windows

Changing setting on client machine is not an option as it will affect other application also and they don't want to mute sound for our applet.

In windows dialogs when we click on some modal dialog when other is still open it make ding sound, but in java it is happening even when  I close dialog using cancel and ok button. Also why it doesn't happen with JNLP client ?

They could be using different window classes or something else is different in each scenario as for as Windows is concerned

because its doesn't involve the browser (which is what is beeping)

Found the solution, is was to do with parents on different dialog and specially mixing of Frame and Dialog as parent.
