Re-Broadcast Streaming Media

We currently have a number of users on our network running Streaming media, often several users consuming the same stream. this is resulting in the consumption of a siginifanct percentage of our bandwidth.

I would like to rebroadcast the Unicast stream as a Multicast stream

I would like a technology that is compatible with the BBC radio stations.

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

First, you need to download VLC.

2
Install it on each computer that you want to be able to watch/listen the streams.

3
Run VLC on the main computer. This is going to be the "master", which will be broadcasting to all the others. The "master" won't show video/radio locally only if you check. You'll have to open a new VLC and connect like others if you want to watch on the main computer.

4
Click File, then Wizard (ctrl+s in XP). This opens the Open Media.

5
Now choose the tab Network. put in the address field: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/wm_asx/aod/radio1.asx now click on the button stream.

6
click on the next button now choose your new destination RTP
if you want to hear the music on the server check the radiobutton Dispay locally.
click on Add button.
fill in the special Multicast address you will be broadcasting to (see Tips).
Deactivat the radiobutton Activating Transcoding.
Select profile Audio - MP3
Click Next again for the Transcoding options.

7
For Additional Streaming Options, enter one for Time-to-Live unless you have multiple routers on your network, which is pretty rare for home networks. You could put 2 or 3 just to be safe, if you suspect that there is more than one.

8
Under Time-to-Live is SAP announce. Check the box and enter a name or phrase that will identify the stream for people in their playlists, like Elm Street Theater, or Casablanca... whatever.

9
Now click Stream to begin the streaming of the files.

The multicast address is an IP address that falls within a certain range. Addresses from 224.0.0.0 to 239.255.255.255 are automatically recognized as multicast by your router (if it supports multicast at all). The range 239.0.0.0 through 239.255.255.255 are "administratively scoped", that is, not global addresses, so fine for using on your lan. The address I use is 239.255.100.100 . Always works for me :).

Sounds good, if I want to run multiple radio stations can I run multiple copies of VLC or Do I need multiple master computers?

I'm guessing each station we broadcast we would need to have on a different port?

No therefore you can use VLM in VLC

start VLC press ctrl +w
