Please have a read through my Exchange 2003 / Activesync article, check your IIS settings, make sure you have Exchange 2003 Service Pack 2 and then run the test on the test site and report back any errors that are not covered in my article:

I'm not sure what you are using that is giving you those results.  Please use the test site referenced in my article.
Thanks

using event viewer, have gone through your link, am much closer now : )
Getting the below error from a browser
Outlook(R) Mobile Access is supported only on Microsoft(R) Exchange Server 2003. Currently your mailbox is stored on an older version of Exchange server. Please contact your system administrator for additional assistance.

I have run the test using active sync tester as per below , i also have forms based authentication disabled

Testing webmail.mycompany.com (SSL, On Internet):

Communications:
Doing DNS lookup on webmail.mycompany.com  OK (X.X.X.X)
Testing TCP to X.X.X.X port 443 ... OK
SSL Certificate:
      Receiving ................................ OK
      Ensuring not Self-Signed ................. OK
      Verifying certificate .................... OK
ActiveSync:
      Checking for application ................. OK
      Checking version ......................... OK (6.5.7638.1)
      Checking protocols ....................... OK (1.0,2.0,2.1,2.5)
User Permissions:
      Checking "mycompany/mobile" .......... FAIL

Result:
ActiveSync detected, but not correctly configured. [HTTP 500: Forms-based auth enabled?]

Okay - the HTTP 500 error suggests you need to run through Method 2 of KB883380 linked to in my article.  This will delete and re-create the Exchange virtual directories and re-create them, then once that problem is out of the way, it will hopefully start to work.

Excellent up and running. recreating the exchange-oma in method two did the trick... solving oma problems not a one click solution!

Thanks : )
