German Postcode Data

Hi there,
Does anybody have any experience of using German postcodes for searching in CRM systems?
In the UK we use grid references in order to calculate the distance between two points (for those who are interested in such things, it is a Pythagoras theorem calculation)
The standard German PLZ does not allow this (one number can cover many square miles; each "grid" can be a different size).  If anyone who has used an equivalent and/or GPS data for the German market could offer any advice it would be gladly received here
Thank you very much

ps.  UK postcodes aren't uniform sizes either the walk level is usually small 15-20 households but can be very large geographically in rural areas...
