Using javascript to lock down a field in EditForm.aspx

I've seen a variety of ways to hide columns in EditForm.aspx and DispForm.aspx using javascript, but not any way to display all columns while making some fields uneditable.

I know that there are ways to do this using the content type to hide a field, but I really need it to show.

Thanks!

ummm... why not change the field type to Label ?  you can do this using sharepoint designer.

When I open DispForm.aspx or EditForm.aspx, I just get a generic 3 column view - the actual fields aren't displayed, so I can't "get" at them to do anything with them. Anytime I edit either of these forms by adding a dataview which does show the fields, it breaks the attachment capability, which is critical. I'd heard there was an infrastructure update that would fix that and our Admin did apply it, but no dice.

that's not a problem or something to be fixed... it's the way sharepoint pages initially appear in sharepoint designer.  there is a specific process for customizing those pages.

I've done that several times - hidden the original web part and inserted a custom list form, but it always disables the ability to attach a file. That probably isnt a big deal in some circumstances, but it's a deal breaker in this one, I'm afraid.
