I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Can you elaborate on that with some specs and details?
Thanks

what does it do when it's "broken" by windows updates?

can you install the updates one at a time until it breaks, and tell us which update killed it?

are you getting driver updates with these windows updates?  might not want to...

Is your laptop Windows 7 - certified? Since you have rebuilt the machine 4 times, I can imagine the following possibilities:

1. The machine is ultimately not able to handle Windows 7.
2. It is able to handle Windows 7 but you need to upgrade some core drivers (audio, video, wired NIC, wireless NIC, chipset, BIOS, mouse and possibly others). Check with the manufacturer for proper Windows 7 drivers. I had to replace all my drivers when I upgraded from Vista to Windows 7.

its been working absolutely fine for over 6 months until a windows update on Thursday night and I am not the only one as a friend using windows 7 from technet had the same issue

the issue is windows will not start correctly after the windows update
it gets stuck in a loop saying windows could not start and goes into startup recovery mode by adding a driver for my screeen nvidia 9600m gt. I know this driver causes my windows to not work so I never installed it but at least before I could go into safe mode and delete it. Since this started I caanot go into safe mode because of the startup problem

How can I tell windows 7 to not do the display driver and just use standard vga.

What happens, then, if you install Windows 7 and before you do Windows 7 updates, you install the proper Windows 7 video driver. I think you are saying that (1) you had previously not install the driver and (2) with updates, the machine won't work because of it.

I don't think Windows can work without a proper video driver (I am not completely certain). I know my Windows 7 laptop has an nVidia adapter, and it did not start up in VGA mode (two installs at the beginning). .... Thinkpads_User

ok I have just tried to install the nvidia driver myself

197.16_notebook_winvista_win7_64bit_international_whql

and that gets the problem but at lease startup rec overy util can do a restore whereas if I do it via windows update startup recovery util can not do the restore

Generally speaking, Windows (Micrsoft) does not do a spendid job of doing hardware (driver) updates and I do not allow that to happen on my machine. Those updates are isolated and do not appear under Critical and also (for me) do not appear under Recommended. I just do not do them. For driver updates, I use the manufacturer's site. I think that may solve your problem. ... Thinkpads_User

its never worked with the nvidia driver I have always have to use standard vga ie the default driver

so it looks like microsoft have added the nvidia driver to recommended to break older machines using windows7 lol and force users to use a proper windows7 laptop lol

Thank you. It was ever thus about PC's - that they need to be compliant to the OS installed.
