HP Dat 160 USB drive and Symantec Backup exec 12.5 off-line
We have an on going issue with an external tape drive, it is 3 months old for the first month it ran fine without any problems now every day the only way to get the tape drive to work is to reboot the server - not an ideal siuation. Everytime the backup runs I get a message device offline in backup exec and putting it back on-line just makes it go straight back offline again.
So Far I have run tape tools run firmware upgrade and installed the latest USB drivers run a live update on backup exec installed all the latest hotfixes to no avail - I've also found some articles about creating a removable media drive in backup exec but this didn't make any difference.
can someone help please.

If I run the Symantec device wizard it doesn't find any hardware and clearly states that USB drives have to use the vendors driver which it is, running tape tools sees the tape drive and it is currently using HP version 1.7.0.2 dated 19/05/2009 - as I mentioned before this drive ran 100% fine for the first month.
Right Click on the tape drive in the BEWS device console and uncheck Enable.
Right Click again and then DELETE the device
Restart the BEWS service and verify if the device is detected in the BEWS device console.
If it appears as OFFLINE do not right click and make offline.

I am confused...
Deleted device restarted BEWS but did not re appear in devices

yes it did re appear - I jumped in a bit quick and posted the response before it appeared again sorry !
Is it working now?
ASKER
No still says off-line when you try and run an inventory or backup
Run a read and write test with the HP Library and Tape tools.
ASKER
Read Write test completes fine with tapetools

Disabled RSM and has been working fine - sorry for delay have been away.
Please note that for the USB tape drives the VENDOR'S device drivers must be loaded prior to starting the BEWS services.
Refer to the HCL for more information.
