Upgrading Cisco Supervisor modules from Sup2 to 720

We have a 6513 that has a bad WS-X6K-SUP2-2GE we have two WS-SUP720-3B modules available. We are thinking of upgrading to the 720 and switching from CATOS to IOS. We may also need to buy new Fan Trays.

Will this work and what other problems might we run into?

If this will work what version of IOS should we run?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

The sup 720's have to go in slot 7 or 8.

Run the latest IOS version if you want whatever bells and whistles are available.

I've never been happy with the config converters. I just configure the new OS by hand.

Link to Q & A about the 720 supervisor cards.

May need 2500 watt power supplies and upgraded fan tray.

So I need to determine if this chassis is 6500 or 6500E?

Does this line of "sh ver" tell me the chassis is a 6500 not a 6500E?

I've never seen (or heard) of a 6513-e. And the "e" models came out around the same time as the sup 720's. So I'm pretty sure that you've got a 6513.

If you don't have FAN2 tray then yes, you'll have to upgrade the fan.

Is there a command to run to see if FAN2 tray is installed?

I opened a new question to ask if we can run CATOS and use the same config from our Sup2 to a new Sup720?
