Windows 2003 to upgrade to windows 2008 but without upgrading Exchange 2003 in both Forests

Hi,

I have a scenario that I have windows 2003 Forest.

I have 3 Domain Controllers
1 DC is also Exchange server 2003

I have two forests have same above configurations

I simply want to upgrade my windows 2003 DCs to windows 2008 DCs in both forests and then create trust relationship for some applications i.e. ISA 2006 for both forests, SCOM monitoring for both forests etc ...

Both forests are on 10..x.x.x and in same building but are separately being administered.

My question is:

What precautions should I take to upgrade my windows 2003 DCs to Windows 2008 DCs while exchange server 2003 will not be upgraded to higher versions for the time being.

The first problem you have is Exchange is on a Domain Controller, which means the only way you can upgdeade this domain controller to Windows 2008 will be to uninstall Exchange from it.

Other than that there is no problems with upgrading the other DC's to 2008 Exchange 2003 works quite happily with Windows 2008 Domain Controllers.

But would it be possible to have the FSMO roles holder DC and other Additional DC be upgraded to 2008 while exchange 2003 DC may stay as an additional 2003 Dc have syncs from 2008 Dcs?

Yes, absolutely no problem at all.

if i upgrade windows 2003 32 bit to windows 2008 64 bit and do not upgrade windows 2003 Additional DC + Exchange 2003 32bit at all then would the difference of 64bit DCs and Additional DCs with this single 32 bit DC+exhange 2003 be a problem ?

firstly ..is it possible to upgrade from windows 2003 32bit to windows 2008 64 bit without doing fresh installation ?

You cannot do an inplace upgrade from x32 to x64 you can only do a re-install.

You can have x32 and x64 DC's without any problems at all.
