Sharepoint Alerts issue

Hi everybody, I'm looking for some solutions to an alert issue inside my WSS 3.0 setup.  Alerts to internal email accounts are working fine, but alerts to externals are not at all, and I can't find the problem.  I've checked with their IT & S department and they are not blocking my server at all, and regular emails go to the externals, just nothing from my server.  I can't figure out how to fix.  Any help would be appreciated!

it sounds like an issue with relay.  the email server / SMTP needs to be configured to allow relay.

if you are running SMTP on your sharepoint server, configure it there.

furthermore, you should be able to determine from IIS / email logs whether or not relay is the issue.
