VMware SCSI Card needed

Hi Experts,

I have a VMware server running ESX Server 3i 3.5.0 Build 226117.

It an HP DL380 G5 Server running an HP Tape Autoloader. Windows Server 2003 with Backup Exec.

The trouble is that sometimes the server locks up with PSOD (Purple Screen of Death) on backups. not always and i think ive narrowed it down to Full Backups. See Image.

I think its an issue with the current card in the machine and am looking to replace it.

How does this card fair up with VMware? I have checked the VCL which makes no sense to me whatsoever!

Has anyone got any opinions on this card? (its actually the one thats currently in the server too) or maybe some tried and tested alternatives?

I assume you looked at the HCL to see whether or not this card is supported, so will comment on something related.  You do NOT, never ever want to run a tape backup on the same SCSI chain that services hard drives, particularly ones in a RAID controller.    Tapes will not only inject bus resets frequently, but HD I/O can easily saturate the bus, so performance will be dismal.

So if you do not have a dedicated controller, then that would explain everything, even if the controller is approved.

Thanks, there is a dedicated RAID controller for the drives. This is an additional card dedicated card for the External Autoloader. As mentioned i checked the HCL but im still none the wiser! Ill check again.

I think its a fairly bog standard card, and i was hoping there was someone out there that could confirm this for me.

SC11Xe is a re-branded Atto card and there aren't any Atto SCSI cards that I can see on the HCL. Lots of Adaptec ones though so that's probably best.

David, why don't you lookup the server specs, it can't take parallel SCSI disks, it's 2.5" SAS/SATA.

Get in the bios of your server (hit F2 in POST). Go to Advance --> Boot Option and Disable ACPI Apic (Advanced Programmable Interrupt Controller). After doing this, your server will not have PSOD anymore. ESXi does not work well on some BIOS with this option enabled.
