outlook 2007 does not search current mail

When using the search feature on outlook 2007 the results never show the most recent 7 days of email. today is 4/27 the results only show 4/20 and before, even thought the search criteria should display these emails. I have checked to see if there is some sort of filter set up but can find nothing. Has anyone seen anything like this before?

interesting..

"To turn on Instant Search, click the message Click here to enable Instant Search in the Instant Search pane. If you do not see this message, you already have Instant Search turned on."

It looks like it is already turned on, but search options are cleared and ghosted out under indexing and search.
