asked on

Oracle DataGuard from another DataGuard

In Data Guard Set up, we have a primary and we can have upto nine stanbdby by databases which can be Physical or Logical.

Question is, Can I create a Logical Dataguard from another Physical Dataguard. We have a situation where we want to minimise cross the country network traffic and create a Logical Dataguard from an existing Physical Dataguard.

Please reply to KA10900@gmail.com

Sincerely,

take a look at metalink notes 789370.1 and 738643.1. There`s a guide on how to create physical standby dbs and how to convert to logical.
In fact, to create a logical standby you have to create a physical standby first and then convert it to a logical standby.

So the answer is YES.

Let me rephrase, there is a Primary called Prim_1 and a Physical Standby called Phy_StdBy_1. They are working fine in tandem. Question is can I make another Phy_Stdby_2 FROM Phy_Stdby_1  WITHOUT TOUCHING the Primary Prim_1.

In my openion, the answer should be NO.

I can create UPTO nine Physical or Logical Standyby from one Primary database and can convert a Physical to a Logical Database but can not create another Physical or Logical Standby from another Physical Standby.

If my understanding is false, please point me to the Oracle Documentation that shows how to do that.

Thanks.

has no sense. is ti simple curiosisty?
I understand what KamalAgnihotri is trying to do. He want to create another standby from existing standby so that the primary database is not disrupted during the process. This is because normally there is some downtime when creating standby from primary.

However, I don't think it is possible. Because the primary will be shipping to the new logical therefore the new logical must be created from the Primary.

I may be wrong.

Sorry I'm busy writing notes for dataguard training :) and I don't have time to give better explanation or research further into this. Perhaps later if it's still required.
