ESX Hardware Configuration

I Just purchased a Dell R710 with 2 160gb SATA Drives.  Then ordered 4 600gb 6gb SAS drives.  I am planning to run ESX4 on this this.  For maximum performance is it better to run the VWare OS on the 2 SATA drives mirrored and the 4 SAS drives in Raid 5  or remove the 2 SATA Drives and run the OS and data on the 4 SAS drives in a Raid 5?  I am planning to purchase more SAS drives in the future.

Thanks

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Your 1st assumption was correct -> Mirror the 2 SATAs, then RAID5 out the SAS drives.

Let me know if you have further questions.

Are you using local drives or SAN/NAS since you second statement confuses me "I am planning to purchase more SAS drives in future" ?

I have 8 drive bays in the server and was planning to add more SAS drives when the money was available.  I believe Perc 7 will allow you to expand an existing array.

Big Business Goals? Which KPIs Will Help You

The most successful MSPs rely on metrics – known as key performance indicators (KPIs) – for making informed decisions that help their businesses thrive, rather than just survive. This eBook provides an overview of the most important KPIs used by top MSPs.

I guess you would have to rebuild your array from scratch  as PERC would not allow you to add your new SAS drives into an existing array configuration.

Sorry, I purchased the PERC H700.  I believe I can add to existing array configuration with this controller, correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks

The way I see it is vmfs would not allow you to increase your extents more than 2 TB although you can use upto 32 X 2 TB extents to create a 64 TB volume which I do not recommend.
