Why is the transfer rate of ghost imaging slow using new INTEL NIC

we purchased new HP elitebooks for our company, we use a PXE boot to image computers using ghost. All models except for these new ones image in about 15 minutes, but these take about 2 hours. I have tried getting drivers from HP and Intel but it doesnt make a difference. It seems that the transfer rate doesn't get above 80 MB/Minute where as others are over 2000 MB/Minute. any insight or suggestions to this would be greatly appreciated.

Check speed and maybe duplex settings - must be consistent at both NIC and switch!

These computers are sent as Bare Metal Devices. i do not have the ability to adjust NIC settings.

So the NIC setting is most probably AUTO. Are the switch ports set to AUTO as well?

yes, switches are set to auto. like i said, all other laptops besides these new models dont have any issues.

I noticed the same issues with other models too.

We discovered that certain NICs using DOS drivers have a real problem with certain switches.  Our HP 6910s for instance slow to a crawl on a GB switch, but run like the wind on a plain 10/100 switch.

Try a different switch (not the same model) to see if your performance changes.  

Barring that, there are actually some tweaks that can be made within the driver files on the dos boot image, but you'll need to doing some reading on how to mod the INI to turn off any advanced stuff.

Setting to 100/FD manually on the switch can make a difference, and you can typically specify the speed duplex in the ghost boot cd/floppy. There is typiclaly an INF files or protocol.ini with your NDIS drivers that will allow you to change the auto-neg to 0 and set the speed duplex manually. Search your boot disk files for the word auto inside them and see if you can find it. This typically solves most peoples slow ghost issues. I've seen this more and more on 1G switch ports, where old NDIS drivers don't know there is a 1000/FD setting even with auto.

My suggestion would be to create a DOS boot disk using the drivers you are having problems with.
Also I would download a copy of iperf and test the speed of the drivers that way.

Also,if I am not mistaken,the newer Ghost stuff should run Windows PE using the TFTP from the host for the PXE,so I question if it is even using a DOS driver in the first place.

You might want to download a Ulitimate boot CD,and run from a Win PE  with the appropriate drivers and test speed that way too.

That INF is for Windows, it has no bearing on running the driver under DOS.  Are you using Ghost through WinPE?

Is this a file found on your ghost disk? If so it's not the one, but might help you specify the speed.

Ok then, the PE environment is 32 bit then.  Is it the Vista build of PE - if so, you'll need the Vista driver to inject into the WIM using peimg /inf command.

rich- we dont use a ghost disk. in LANDesk, we just have it kick off ghost32.exe from a share. then point to the image file

NETMAN- ive tried vista drivers, win7 drivers, and xp drivers, WinPE wont recognize any driver files besides the one i specified which is the xp 32-bit driver.

Latest is 11.5.1.2266.

You can find out by using the /ver switch on ( ghost32  /ver)

That's a low rev that has issues with win7 and Server8,you should be able to download the updated exe if you are registered @ the Symantec site .
Try that and see if your issues go away.

Sounds like speed/duplex issues, the switch should be able to report to you what speed was auto-detected between the host's by looking at each port's settings. Cisco switches running IOS are typically "show interface fastethernet 1/22" something like that.. You can set the switch ports to 100/FD as another test to see if that fixes what seems like a potential duplex issue.

Also, just an FYI... i have tried images for WIN7 and XP, both with very slow speeds, so i dont think the OS has anything to do with the problem.

The only sure way to test the speed ,is to use iperf.
You can run it from Windows,Windows PE ,as well as dos.
If you've got issues without the Ghost executable,then it's play with the switch and driver settings.

i know it has something to do with the driver. although we will be getting these machines without an OS loaded on it, so we will not beable to change settings on the driver through the OS. and i dont know how to edit the actual driver file. HP and INTEL doesnt have an answer for me... very frusterating.

After Upgrading the WinPE 2.0 , it is now recognizing the vista 32-bit drivers and the speed is back to normal...
