why is checkbox for "format with multiple columns" greyed out in details section crystal reports 10

why is checkbox for "format with multiple columns" greyed out in details section crystal reports 10.

A report was generated with this option checked, but now I want to change the label format to one label at a time on a thermal printer . what do I need to do to uncheck this formatting option?

Thanks

It was probably built using the LABEL WIZARD and a specific label style or number was chosen.  You probably need to first change the printer or the paper the printer is setup for and then you should be able to uncheck the option.

mimcc,

Yes, I beleive that was how it was created. I already changed printers and paper size and still the check box is greyed out.

OK, so here is what I know now and another way to ask this question.

It appears the report was generated with the mailing label report creation wizard. this wizard appears to assume that you are using 8x11 page so will automatically check "format with multiple columns".

I want to use this report, but modify it to use on a thermal printer that prints only 1 label wide. To do this I need to uncheck "format with multiple columns", which is greyed out.

Is there any way to uncheck this option in the above case?

I really don't want to create the whole report from scratch as the selection formulas etc. are complex and it would take me too long to re-write it all.

Thanks for any ideas.

You should be able to copy everything from the old report to a new report.

Have you tried changing the printer the report uses to the one you want to use?
You may have to set that printer as the default for the machine

I tried changing the Crystal sample mailing label report and had the same issue.  I dont have a printer that has a narrow page and I can't figure out how to create a custom page size even though I have done it to create some very wide pages.

mimmc,

I had already set the default printer to the Eltron thermal printer, and set it as the printer for the report. Same problem. It appears that once you use the wizard to create a label report you can't change the formatting, uncheck "format with multiple columns". Interestingly, if you create a new form using the label creation wizard in Crystal reports, it will still check  "format with multiple columns" but will show only one label down.

How do I copy a form with all the selection formulas and variables intact? I tried re-creating a new form that way but I must be doing something wrong as when I use the report in Business Vision it sends BV for a loop.

Thanks

When you say form do you mean report?

To copy from one report to the other you need to have both reports open
In the original you select the text or object to copy
Put it in the new report in the same place.

Mimcc,

Yes I mena report. I had copied the report before. All fields etc. There were a lot of selection formulas to be copied also. As well I had to re-create the paramater fields, but the report crashes Business Vision. Is there a simple way to completely duplicate/copy the report into a new report maintaining all the selection formulas, Parameter fields etc?

Thanks in advance

You can use the WIndows Explorer and make a copy of the file but it will still have the same issue.

Unfortunately there is no easy way to copy everything from a report.

OK thanks. I guess I will have to talk to Crystal Reports itself and see if they have a solution.
