"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

With regards to CentOS 5, the ext4 file system is bleeding edge, is not integrated and is not recommended. If you do attempt it, you will: (1) be on your own, (2) will need a custom kernel and many fs utilities rebuilt.

If you must have ext4, please wait for CentOS 6 and ask again . . .

My advice is to invest in a good quality UPS that will provide sufficient power to enable a clean shutdown to take place once a mains outage has been signalled and to stay with your current file system.
I totally agree with omaheshwar, but if you really need ext4, then

yum install e4fsprogs

mount -t ext4 ......
