WIndows Explorer "freezes" when MS word document opened from Windows Explorer

When opening a MS Word document from Windows Explorer (Using Win XP Pro with SP2) , Explorer freezes (about 50% of the time), and i have to kill explorer  and word.  This also happens if i try and open a word document attachment in Outlook.  However, when opening from within Office (file > open) there are no problems.   I'm assuming that there is a conflict with another program on my machine (i had the same problem on my last laptop)...but don't know how to identify it. I found a similar question posted (ID: 23320268), and installed Process Monitor as per that solution  - but could not make head or tail of what Process Monitor was telling me.   Thanks

Your symptoms sound like this : You may experience problems in Windows Explorer or in the Windows shell after you install security update MS06-015 - ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165). Try installing the newer 908531 (MS06-015) located here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=392C2F1B-AA24-48E5-8D5B-EA56341DB936&displaylang=en

Having said that, I would recommend installing the newer version, then downloading and installing sp3 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=5B33B5A8-5E76-401F-BE08-1E1555D4F3D4&displaylang=en). I know the title says for' it pros'...but this is the full install you can download and run. You might not want to run the install over the web anyway. It takes about 1/2 hr, but it is worth it. This is simply a rollup of updates since the sp2 was released, up until Microsoft released Vista (which we all know was a bomb).

Check if there is a CD in the drive and remove it. Unplug  any external USB drives (or actually unplug everything from USB ports except for keyboard and mouse. See if the problem persists. If it does, restart in safe mode, and see if the problem exists there. If it does, chances are that you hard drive is failing, so you should run a disk check ASAP and back up your data.

That it - I installed the update and SP 3, and this solved this issue which has been bothering me for months.  Many thanks.
