HP proliant DL380 G5 ESxi install

I am attempting to install the free version of VMware (ESXi?) on a HP proliant DL380 G5,

Is this hardware compatible with this free version of VMWARE?

Yep :)  I have serveral of them in my org. It's always good to check your hardware compatibility though (see the link "arun" provided).

I would say yes I have installed esxi on numerous hp and dell servers

even old ebay servers like hp580 g2 and dell pe1850 !

It seems like I nneed the NIc drivers and should update the firmware before starting

Not necessarily; DL380 G5s should be ready to go as they are supported. But, it is always best practice to upgrade any firmware/BIOS before installing your OSs (or, in this case, a hypervisor).
