Javascript translation below:
function encode($val) {
	var $base=62;
	var $chars='0123456789abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ';
    // can't handle numbers larger than 2^31-1 = 2147483647
    var $str = '';
    do {
        $i = $val % $base;
        $str = $chars.charAt($i) + $str;
        $val = ($val - $i) / $base;
    } while($val > 0);
    return $str;
}

function decode($str) {
	var $base=62;
	var $chars='0123456789abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ';

Thanks!  That looks like exactly what I need.  However I just get a 0 when I try to use it.

Could you please look at my code?
