Restoring a Dell studio 1535 to factory default

I have a customers Dell Studio 1535 that needs a re-build. The c: drive has been formatted however the recovery partition is still there.

I have since found that the onboard cd-rom drive will not read cd's or DVD's, I have plugged in an external USB dvd drive but it won't recognise that.

Is there any other way that I can get into the recovery partition and start the machine re-building?

You can try to access the Dell Restore feature by using Ctrl+F11 but that may not work for you as the newer Dells with Vista on them use F8 and then a restore option from the Vista Boot menu.
While the computer starts, press the F8 key, until the Advanced Boot Options menu appears
Using the ¿ Down Arrow , select Repair Your Computer and press Enter
Select your language and click Next
Log in as an Administrative user, and click OK
Click Dell Factory Image Restore from the System Recovery Options

Sorry, thought I had covered that by saying that the c drive that had the os on has been formatted so therefore the safe mode boot menu will not appear nor does the repair option.
What about F12? That would bring up the diagnostics for a Dell not entirely sure if the restore option is in there or not.
This article is interesting and may be useful if you can get to a DOS prompt somehow.

It describes how to manually run the image from the recovery partition through a command prompt line.
